Presented by Erica N. Fuller, Director of Regulatory & Workforce Services, Educational Credential Evaluators (ECE)
Hosted by The Nurses Magazine® · Part of Symposium & Awards 2026
About this session
Internationally educated nurses often encounter difficulty understanding credential-evaluation requirements, obtaining acceptable educational records, selecting the correct evaluation service or report, and responding to requests for additional documentation. Because requirements differ according to the intended state, licensing authority, educational institution, employer, or immigration-related purpose, inaccurate or outdated information can lead to delays, additional expenses, and frustration.
In this live, one-panelist discussion, ECE's director with experience in international credential evaluation will examine common challenges encountered by internationally educated nurses. Through structured questions and practical examples, the director will explain the roles of applicants, educational institutions, credential-evaluation organizations, boards of nursing, and other recipients. The director will offer strategies for verifying requirements, preparing documents, responding to deficiencies, and avoiding common mistakes.

Credential requirements & timelines
Common questions on what internationally educated nurses need to prepare, how long each step takes, and how to avoid delays on the path to U.S. licensure.
Yes. Each U.S. state and territory sets its own licensing requirements through its board of nursing. Requirements can differ in the type of evaluation report accepted, the English-language proficiency standard, whether a certification or specific board exam is required, and the documents you must submit. Always confirm the exact requirements with the board in the state where you intend to practice; not all states accept the same evaluation.
